A favorite place for locals after work for a quick snack , the Shilin Night Market really comes alive after 6:30 pm and is active until very late at night . This place is filled with visitors nearly every day of the year. This night market is the oldest and largest in Taiwan. And it was founded more than 100 years ago as a small fishing and vegatable market and today spans about 10 blocks in area.
Street vendors sell everything from clothes to all manner of snacks, including grilled corn-on-the-cob , "stinky" tofu, double-wrapped biscuits, cantonese congee, clam omelets, deep-fried buns and other favorite local Taiwanese dishes.
At times the market is so crowded you can hardly move. It's the disorder that makes Shihlin Night Market so unique.
People go there for the crowds and chaos, good food and shopping for bargains. And believe me
there are plenty of bargins to be found. Whether it be name brand or knock-off, you will
find great deals and prices. My daughters would go crazy shopping in these types of markets,
especially after seeing all the converse shoes (a current favorite footwear for both).
Shilin also has a carnival-like atmosphere, with games like catching a goldfish using a tissue paper net (the goldfish is the prize), and shooting plastic cans with air rifles.
