Hong Kong: Kowloon

Kowloon, Nine Dragons, is the large southern peninsula on the Chinese mainland north of Hong Kong Island that became part of Hong Kong in 1860. I spent all my time in the area most popular among tourists, Tsim Sha Tsui (Elephant's Trunk) on the southern tip of Kowloon. From here, it was easy for me to catch the Star Ferry to Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon-Canton-Railway (KCR), and most any bus you would want. This also allowed me primary access to all the night markets Kowloon is so famous for.

The one night market I had heard so much about was one called the Temple Street Night Market. Here you can buy just about anything; shirts, watches, leather goods, VCD and DVD movies, etc. Once again, you must be aware of fakes. My goal was to purchase as many DVD (Digital Video Disk) movies as possible, especially the rip-off disks for my company, C-Cube Microsystems. These illegal, and often poorly produced disks, are good for testing our DVD players.

Unfortunately, the night before my arrival, Hong Kong Customs set up raids all over Hong Kong in attempt to stop the production and sale of illegal VCDs and DVDs. All the movie house and many of the radio stations closed down in protest to support these raids. Jackie Chan was even involved in a protest march at the same time I was on Victoria Peak. As a consequence, every where I went was either closed, or did not carry any VCD or DVD titles.
